Communication Studies Concentration Holds Mindfulness Lecture to Foster Student Growth and Psychological Well-being


     

     

    On the evening of April 3, the Media Communication and Psychology course of the Communication Studies Concentration in the Master of Arts in Communication Studies at Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) hosted a special lecture. Dr. Wang Xianglan, Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, was invited as the guest speaker. Under the theme “Mindfulness Techniques and the Enhancement of Psychological Literacy,” she provided a systematic introduction to the core concepts and practical applications of mindfulness, covering both its theoretical origins and experiential practice. The lecture was moderated by Mr. Yue Jihui.

    The lecture focused on topics including the concept and development of mindfulness, its fundamental attitudes, and commonly used techniques. Drawing on her professional research and practical experience, Dr. Wang Xianglan systematically reviewed the development of mindfulness practices and related knowledge, helping students gain a more comprehensive understanding of the field. Using specific cases and real-world applications, she also introduced common mindfulness exercises such as mindful breathing and mindful walking, and explained the value of mindfulness training in relieving stress, regulating emotions, and enhancing concentration. During the session, Dr. Wang additionally guided students through simple mindfulness exercises on site, enabling them to experience firsthand the practical effects of mindfulness in relaxing the body and mind and stabilizing emotions. As a scientifically grounded and effective approach to psychological self-regulation, mindfulness training helps enhance self-awareness and emotional adjustment, while also providing valuable guidance for students in paying closer attention to their own mental health.

    During the Q&A session, students actively raised questions based on practical challenges they encountered in their studies and daily lives. Dr. Wang Xianglan responded patiently and offered targeted advice. Through the exchange, students gained a deeper understanding of mindfulness techniques and developed a clearer sense of how to apply self-regulation strategies in their everyday academic and personal lives.

     

    Rich in content and presented in an accessible yet insightful manner, the lecture combined theoretical depth with practical relevance, offering students valuable guidance in understanding mindfulness techniques and enhancing their psychological literacy. The atmosphere on site was warm and engaging, with students listening attentively and participating actively throughout. The lecture concluded successfully amid lively interaction and meaningful exchange.

     

     


    Speaker Profile

    Dr. Wang Xianglan is a Doctor of Medicine, Chief Physician, and Master’s supervisor, and currently serves as Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. She is a certified psychological counselor accredited by the Chinese Mental Health Association and a registered hypnotherapist with the Chinese Ericksonian Clinical Hypnosis Institute. She has long been engaged in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and psychological disorders, as well as psychological counseling and therapy. Her primary research focuses on the clinical treatment and pathological mechanisms of depressive disorders.
