As the foremost of the Confucian "Six Classics," the I Ching embodies the philosophical wisdom and cultural genes of ancient Chinese civilization. Cantonese Chanting of Classics, a Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage, transmits the charm of ancient texts through melodic recitation. The digital dissemination of the I Ching not only requires solidifying the foundation of textual preservation and academic research but also expanding into diverse media forms such as audio and video, breathing new life into this time-honored classic in the contemporary era.
To promote the digital evolution and living heritage of the I Ching, the Chinese Culture and Global Communication Program at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University, in partnership with Zhongshan Zhan Garden, organized a remarkable event: Cantonese Chanting of the I Ching on November 15, 2025. The stage came alive with the magnetic presence of Professor John Lai from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the exceptionally gifted Ms. Jochebed. Hosted by Dr. Wong Kar Bo, the event breathed vibrant life into the ancient wisdom of the I Ching through mesmerizing Cantonese chanting, enchanting students and visitors alike.
The morning unfolded with elegance and tranquility. Prof. Lai and Ms. Jochebed wandered through the scenic landscapes of Zhan Garden, chanting verses from the I Ching in various picturesque spots—by serene waterside pavilions and along winding corridors. Their voices, weaving ancient rhythms with a contemporary touch, blended seamlessly with the natural beauty of the garden. Visitors of all ages stopped in their tracks, drawn in by the mesmerizing harmony of sound and scenery, creating a truly immersive experience.
In the afternoon, the event transitioned to the heart of Tianchi Lake, located in the second section of the garden. Surrounded by rolling hills, crystal-clear waters, and the gentle swaying of lotus blossoms, the lakeside stage resembled a painting brought to life. Prof. Lai and Ms. Jochebed alternated their chanting, their voices resonating with clarity and emotion. The audience, gathered around the lake, responded with enthusiastic applause as the performance reached its peak, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.
Following the chanting, a tea break provided an opportunity for meaningful exchanges. Prof. Lai and Ms. Jochebed joined BNBU Associate Professor Yeh Chiaying, Dr. Peng Bei, Dr. David Bartosch from Beijing Normal University, BNBU art instructor Mr. Ko Chenglin, and students from various majors in an engaging discussion on reading, chanting and recording the classic. ELLS(EPC) student Ms. Yu Qinghe and DS student Mr. Xie Yuzhen performed the drum music of the Chinese Court Music. Amid the warm, fragrant aroma of tea and the rhythmic sound of drums, the group exchanged thoughts and reflections, their conversation flowing seamlessly as dusk gently settled over the garden. As night fell, lanterns illuminated the garden, casting a soft glow over the event's closing moments. The day ended as gracefully as it began, leaving behind an air of warmth, refinement, and a deep appreciation for the timeless beauty of the I Ching and Cantonese chanting.
