Programme Introduction

In an era shaped by globalisation, artificial intelligence, and the rapid expansion of digital media, intercultural communication is undergoing profound change. Communication today extends far beyond traditional language exchange. It increasingly takes place across digital platforms, multilingual content ecosystems, AI-assisted tools, and global communication networks. As a result, fields such as international communication, cultural diplomacy, cross-border e-commerce, and AI-enabled language services urgently need versatile professionals who combine Chinese-English bilingual competence, intercultural understanding, digital communication skills, and the effective use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

This demand is also closely connected to national and regional development priorities. China’s international communication capacity building, the development of a culturally strong nation, the “Digital China” strategy, and the internationalisation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area all call for a new type of talent. To tell China’s stories well and enhance the global influence of Chinese culture, society needs professionals who understand international contexts, are sensitive to cultural differences, and can use digital technologies to communicate effectively with global audiences.

The Digital Intercultural Studies programme is designed to respond to these emerging needs. It is neither a conventional language programme nor a traditional communication programme. Instead, the programme innovatively integrates language, culture, and digital technology, bringing together Chinese-English bilingual communication, intercultural understanding and analysis, digital communication, and AI applications. Through systematic training, students will develop the ability to communicate across cultures, create and localise digital content, engage with global digital platforms, and use language technologies and AI tools responsibly.

The programme aims to cultivate a new generation of intercultural communication specialists for the digital age — professionals who can understand cultures, apply technologies, and build meaningful connections between China and the world.
